Celtic not signing Emilio Izaguirre is hardly a surprise

Emilio Izaguirre’s career has found its next platform – and surprise surprise it isn’t Parkhead.

Nope, the Honduran has finalised a deal with Montagua back in his homeland of Honduras. It officially brings to an end his one-year return to Glasgow that started last summer, with no return now possible.

There were fears for some that he could’ve come back to the club for a third time. Montagua president Eddy Atala claimed last month that a return to Celtic was possible. He claimed that the offer was there for Izzy if he wanted it (Daily Record).

But, instead, it’s been confirmed by the Honduran side that he’ll rejoin them after previously playing for the club between 2003 and 2010 before Celtic signed him up.

Emilio Izaguirre’s career was never taking him back to Celtic

There just seemed to be no feasible way that Izzy returned to Celtic for a third spell. It was something the majority of fans would’ve been against, and also something the player himself surely wouldn’t have enjoyed.

During his two spells at Parkhead, the Honduran left-back has reeled in a total of 271 appearances. He’s made his name at Parkhead and done all he can.

But anyone could see last season that Izzy was slowing up. It showed against Valencia at Parkhead in particular when the game was just too fast-paced for him. Now is the right time for him to call it a day in Glasgow, and the player knew it himself.

It was always difficult to criticise Celtic for the Izzy link. It just never seemed as though the club would be silly enough to sanction the deal. And, to their credit, they never did.

Izaguirre deserves a place where he can play regularly. Just because he isn’t up to the pace of football at Celtic, he’s still a tremendously gifted left-back. His technique remains up there with some of the best in Scotland, but his pace has unfortunately decreased as the years have gone on.

But there was never any need to get worried about Izaguirre’s potential return. Surely, the club were never going to let it happen. In the end, the best solution for all parties has been reached.
