Wilfried Nancy is on the brink of becoming Celtic’s new manager, it is being reported.

It’s almost three weeks since the news of Brendan Rodgers’ sudden resignation appeared from nowhere on a Monday night.

Martin O’Neill has been in temporary charge of the team since, and he has insisted that he doesn’t expect to remain in the role long-term.

And it now seems that he won’t, with Dermot Desmond moving to seal his top target from MLS side Columbus Crew.

The Hoops are back in action next week against St Mirren, and this could be the fans’ first chance to see the team under their new boss.

Kieran McKenna and Kjetil Knutsen are among those to have reportedly piqued the Parkhead hierarchy’s interest.

But with both of that pair proving difficult appointments financially, it seems that Desmond’s preference is to get his man as quickly as possible.

According to the Daily Record, Nancy has been sold on the Celtic role – hardly a surprise given the undeniable step up from Columbus.

The report also claims that Nancy has been at the top of the wishlist from day one, with Desmond initially reaching out to him after Rodgers’ resignation.

He reportedly agreed to wait until the end of Columbus’ season, which came after their play-off defeat to FC Cincinnati last week.

And talks are apparently scheduled for this weekend with a view of Nancy becoming the new manager at Celtic Park.

The Frenchman was named as last year’s MLS Coach of the Year, having transformed the Crew into one of the most entertaining and formidable teams in the country, winning several trophies in the process.

It remains to be seen if this success will translate to a completely different environment in Glasgow – Nancy will not have been many fans’ first choice.

But the success of Ange Postecoglou told us all that it’s not always about names and reputation – if Nancy can have a similar impact to the Australian, we would all be happy.

It appears to be the dawn of a new era at Parkhead.
