Celtic pair James McCarthy and James Forrest could make Glasgow derby
Celtic could have both James Forrest and James McCarthy fit for Sunday’s Glasgow derby at Ibrox.
Forrest and McCarthy both missed out Saturday’s 6-0 hammering of St Mirren. Both will also be watching from home as the Hoops take on AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Europa League tonight.
Hoops fans have yet to see much of McCarthy since he signed several weeks ago. As for Forrest, Celtic desperately need him back to ensure we have strong competition for Abada.
And thankfully it doesn’t look as though either man is carrying a serious knock. Instead, Ange Postecoglou believes both could be fit for Ibrox.
Touching briefly on his injury situation, he said the following as quoted by the Glasgow Times:
“They are still not 100 percent. I think both potentially [will be fit] for the weekend.
“Josip (Juranovic) is in and can’t play in this game, but he’ll be available for the weekend as well which is good because we’ll probably need some fresh legs for the game.”
Celtic will have Forrest and McCarthy back soon
You wouldn’t expect either man to start at Ibrox considering there are other positional rivals who will go into the game with some momentum. However, having the option there to field both is a massive boost for Postecoglou.
And another boost for Celtic is the upcoming international break. Whilst Forrest is away with Scotland, McCarthy will likely be staying at home due to his lack of game-time recently. That means he’ll have a good fortnight to be prepared for our next phase of games.
Forrest, meanwhile, will hopefully head away with Scotland with Steve Clarke given some strict instructions on his usage of him. If he’s carrying any sort of knock, the last thing we need is any over-exertion on international duty.
But having both available for Ibrox would be ideal too. Given Liel Abada’s tendency to fade out of games in the second half, Forrest would be a great alternative. Same goes for McCarthy if we’re needing a more experienced head to see out a result.
It’s disappointing to lose both men for tonight’s game in Alkmaar. Both could’ve made a massive impact with their technical abilities.
Instead, Postecoglou just needs to press ahead. Fingers crossed we get both back for Ibrox.
