Celtic pair Stephen Welsh and Matt O’Riley’s upcoming international clash will be broadcast live on BBC Scotland this Friday night.

Welsh’s Scotland under-21 side will travel to O’Riley’s Denmark after picking up an impressive clean sheet draw against table-toppers Belgium on Sunday.

O’Riley, meanwhile, has secured a playoff spot with the Danes as they look to secure qualification for the UEFA U21 European Championships next year.

The former MK Dons man managed to bag an assist just a minute into his fist start in Denmark’s 3-0 win over Kazakhstan on Saturday.

Both men go into the clash feeling confident and looking highly certain to start the game. Something that may be of interest to Ange Postecoglou.

Scotland cannot qualify from their Euro qualifying group. However, they could leapfrog Turkey with a win on Friday. The game will mark the final match for Scotland’s campaign whilst Denmark have still to face Turkey next Wednesday.

Stephen Welsh and Matt O’Riley set to go head-to-head

It’s looking all but certain that the Celtic pair will indeed be going head-to-head from the start. O’Riley proved his point against Kazakhstan whilst Welsh has been captaining the Scotland Under-21s in recent camps.

It’ll be interesting to see how the occasion goes. Especially considering the individual seasons both men have had in Glasgow.

You feel that Welsh will have more to prove than O’Riley from a Celtic perspective. With Carl Starfelt injured and question marks hovering over whether he’ll be available for pre-season, Welsh is right to be sniffing an opportunity.

Of course, in terms of their international careers, O’Riley is the one looking to build up some momentum. Welsh’s place in the Scotland starting XI feels all but guaranteed these days. Matt, however, it still in a battle for his spot and needs to keep producing the goods.

Denmark will be heavy favourites for the game, but Scotland showed an incredible defensive performance in Belgium that hasn’t really ben getting enough attention.

It’s certainly going to be an intriguing contest.
