Celtic player states he wants to "have my career here" in big message of commitment
Celtic renaissance man Anthony Ralston has delivered the ultimate message of commitment as he confirmed that he wants to spend his career at Parkhead.
Ralston looked destined for the exit door in the summer after previously coming through the youth academy. With uninspiring loan spells with the likes of Dundee United and St Johnstone respectively, the right-back didn’t look as if he had the tools to make it in Glasgow.
However, out of nowhere, the 23-year-old has sprung into life in a green-and-white jersey. Being given regular minutes by Ange Postecoglou, Ralston has been absolutely flying to the extend that he’s keeping Croatia’s number 1 right-back Josip Juranovic out of the team.
And as he reflected on his progress this year, Ralston talked up the fact he wants to stay for the long-term. As quoted by the Glasgow Times, the right-back said: “To come from where I was at the beginning of the season to where I am now, it’s been a massive turnaround. I’m proud of myself for what I’ve managed to achieve.
“But it’s only the beginning for me. It’s no secret that I want to play for Celtic. I want to have my career here. I want to keep going in this direction but I’m delighted by how the season’s gone so far for myself – because I feel I’ve contributed to the team in such a positive way.
“I hope I can continue to do that in the second half of the season. Overall, there’s been a massive amount of progress made as a club since the gaffer came in. Every player has progressed to this point. And as a team, we’ve been brilliant. It’s important now that we keep moving in the right direction.”
Anthony Ralston making the most of his final Celtic opportunity
There was a time not so long ago that the Celtic fans would’ve scoffed at the idea of Ralston staying for the long-term. The prospect of him committing his career to Parkhead would’ve been laughable. Back in the summer, not many even thought he would’ve lasted to see 2022.
But it says a lot about his progress that supporters will now be excited by such remarks. Signing a long-term contract at the tail-end of last year, Ralston is now tied to Celtic Park until 2025.
Now, the prospect of Ralston spending his career at Parkhead looks extremely profitable for the football club. He’s now showing attributes that Celtic supporters didn’t even know he had in his locker. To have such commitment from a player making the level of impact that he is? It’s invaluable for Postecoglou.
Of course, nobody can predict just what’s going to happen in the long-term. Big-money offers can often lead clubs and players to go down paths they weren’t previously planning. But not having one of our top stars outlining his love of the EPL, for example, is certainly ideal. It helps Celtic hold all the aces for any future negotiations.
For now, however, the prospect of a move isn’t even something that needs to be discussed. Ralston has so much to achieve at Parkhead now that he’s a fully-fledged member of the first-choice XI. Holding onto his spot ahead of Juranovic will now be his main goal heading into the second half of the season.
Fingers crossed this truly is the birth of a long-term Celtic career for Ralston. The signs are certainly promising so far.
