Character. It was one thing that Brendan Rodgers raved about in his Celtic side.

Now the Celtic players must show an abundance of character in spite of their former boss.

A bizarre twist of events has saw Rodgers up sticks and leave for Leicester City.

According to the Evening Times he told his stunned players on Monday he was leaving for England. They initially thought he was joking, but no one is laughing now.

The fans are feeling upset and betrayed at the Rodgers news. To leave during the most important part of the season for mid-table mediocrity is a slap in the face for fans.

Rodgers banged on about character at the football club during his tenure. It appears he’s shown little of it himself during his departure from the club.

Let’s not forget the players in all of this. They’ve been let down badly too by their former manager. He made so many of them better as footballers during his near three year reign at Celtic.

Tom Rogic and Callum McGregor are two in particular who have came in leaps and bounds under the Northern Irishman.

For a man who appeared to be such a great man manager, he hasn’t half slapped his players in the face by leaving them for Leicester.

As the old saying goes, ‘the show must go on’.

Neil Lennon will be the interim manager until the end of the season.

His first two games will be Hearts and Hibs away. Not the easiest of starts…

However, it may work to his benefit, if the players show the character Rodgers told us they have in spades.

Fans may still weep the loss of Rodgers, however for the players there is no time to feel sorry for themselves.

They must get back on it at Tynecastle and send a message out to the league – “We’re the same old Celtic.”

There is a league title and a treble treble to be won, it’s just a shame it will be won in spite of the man who made it all possible.

What are you made of, Celtic?

No man is bigger than the club, and the Celtic player must show that against Hearts.

Rodgers may have moulded them into a formidable team, but they can be treble treble winners without him.

They have a big chance to show the character they have in spades. If they do their jobs, there will be scenes of historical celebration from the Celtic supporters.

That will have Rodgers questioning his latest career move.
