Celtic’s work on the redevelopment of the Barrowfield training complex will continue throughout 2023 before construction gets underway at the start of next year.

As previously discussed on 67 Hail Hail, planning permission for an indoor training centre and separate modular changing and office facilities was granted, with conditions, by Glasgow City Council back in September and November 2021 after an initial announcement of the project in 2019.

The club reiterated their intent to follow through with the plans in a financial statement earlier this year and now The Scottish Daily Mail [12/08 print edition, page 106] reports that construction will commence in early 2024.

The paper states the project is costing the club as much as £20m. It’s a significant investment. The facilities will be primarily used by the Celtic B and Celtic FC Women teams.

However, the centre may also be used by the Celtic first team during bad winter weather conditions. Currently, there is no full-size indoor training pitch at Lennoxtown, so it’s a necessary construction.

Much work has already taken place including investigations of the site relating to drainage, refuse storage and landscaping maintenance – amongst other issues. Documents have consistently been uploaded to the Glasgow City Council planning portal over the last 12 months.

In 2019, Celtic announced the new facility would feature 2 full-sized outdoor grass pitches, 2 first-class artificial pitches, both outdoor and indoor, as well as an outdoor warm-up area.

Investment in club infrastructure is crucial for the club to continue to progress and modernise. A brand new facility of this quality will hopefully be a major boost to all of the teams representing the club.

With Celtic in such rude financial health, it makes sense to reinvest that cash back into the club’s future.
