Celtic provided squad boost with injured defender in contention for Ross County
Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that defender Carl Starfelt is now back in contention ahead of this weekend’s trip to Ross County.
The central defender has been out of action since early June after picking up a hamstring knock whilst on international duty with Sweden.
This resulted in the 27-year-old missing the entirety of the Hoops productive pre-season camp, spent working in Austria and back at Lennoxtown.
Throughout the last few weeks, the defender has spent time working on his recovery from his injury and returned to training amongst the squad last week.
The Scottish Premiership opener against Aberdeen came too early for Starfelt, with Stephen Welsh stepping in to replace him alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers.
Speaking to the press ahead of the Bhoys’ second game of the 2022/23 campaign, Ange Postecoglou confirmed that Starfelt is now back in contention for a place in the squad.
However, the Celtic manager admitted he was still to decide whether it will be best to see him feature in tomorrow or next week’s game as he gets set to take the final step up in his recovery.
He said [Celtic FC]: “He (Carl Starfelt) is training, and he’s available.
“Obviously, we’ve just got to pick our moment to throw him back in there. He hasn’t played any competitive football yet, but he’s trained for his first full week and is available. So, I’ll just make a decision about whether we bring him back tomorrow or next week.”
Ange Postecoglou has plenty of quality options at the back as Carl Starfelt prepares to make his return.
With Carl Starfelt expected to make his return to the Celtic squad this weekend, Ange Postecoglou now has plenty of quality options as to who plays in the centre of defence.
We know what to expect from Cameron Carter-Vickers, who will always put in a solid display and created a good partnership with the Swedish internationalist last season.
Whilst Stephen Welsh was arguably one of the best performers in last weekend’s win, keeping new signing Mortiz Jenz waiting for his competitive debut.
You would imagine the Scotland under-21 internationalist will keep his place in the side tomorrow afternoon. However, we could see the return of Starfelt at some point in the game.
