In a statement, Celtic have condemned online abuse aimed at defender Nir Bitton following last week’s defeat to Rangers at Ibrox.
Bitton was sent off against the league leaders, prompting some to disgrace themselves and post over the line slurs aimed at the Israeli international and his family.
Action Against Discrimination had previously criticised Celtic and the Scottish FA for failing to speak out against the incidents [The Scotsman].
However, today, the club have broken their silence.
In a statement released to The Scottish Sun, the club said: “Celtic has forwarded this vile content to the police and considers that everything should be done to identify those responsible and that all appropriate action should be taken.
“Nir Bitton and his family have our full support. Let us be very clear, those responsible for such vile comments do not represent Celtic or Celtic supporters.
“They are faceless and nameless.”
Clearly, any discriminatory language aimed at Celtic players is completely out of order, whether online or in person.
Bitton shouldn’t have to go through such abuse in any circumstance nevermind for making a mistake on the football pitch.

The club’s statement on this may be considered a little late, but it is unequivocal in its condemnation.
Hopefully, the long-serving Celtic star receives the appropriate assistance within the football club to help both him and his family through this ordeal.
In other news, there’s been an update on Celtic’s transfer hunt this January.
