Celtic reportedly given green light for giant rotator screen

A Celtic Park upgrade has reportedly been given the go-ahead as the Hoops were given the green light to build a giant rotating screen outside the stadium.

The development of the screen has been something of a saga. The Scottish Sun, however, states that after appealing to the Scottish Government, Celtic have been allowed to go ahead with their plans.

An 8×4 LED display will now be built on the right side of the Celtic Way. The images will apparently display “live and recorded TV images as well as adverts”.

Reporter Chris Norman said in his ruling, as reported by the Sun, the following:

“I find that it would not be out of keeping with the scale of the stadium and the other elements that I have identified within the concourse. It would not therefore detract from the amenity of the locality.

“Subject to each of the conditions proposed by the council, and taking into account traffic management during events at the stadium, I conclude that it would not impact on public safety.

“I allow the appeal and grant express advertisement consent.”

Argument against the new Celtic Park upgrade doesn’t stand up.

The main gripe with the idea was that it was dangerous. It could apparently distract drivers and potentially cause accidents. That’s what was flagged up by the Glasgow City Council.

But it’s hardly any different from moving billboards. It’s not something that should cause any detriment to anyone. Given its apparent placement, it would mainly concern drivers on London Road. But, in truth, it’s a bit of an over-exaggeration from the GCC.

The plans were originally rejected by the council back in March. This came after original documents over the plan were sent to the council back in September 2016.

Norwich City have a similar kind of screen at their own stadium. It was the first-ever of its kind in world football. You can have a look at the screen at Carrow Road here (AvInteractive).

It’s likely not going to mean much to the supporters at face value. There has been no confirmed timeline for when we can expect it to be in place. But it’s clearly an important investment for the club, and the acceptance of it from the government is a positive step for us.

With the recent upgrade of the surrounding areas at Parkhead, this will be yet another intriguing addition to it.
