Celtic reportedly interested in Shankland, but could he make the step-up?
A report has credited Celtic with an interest in Ayr United striker Lawrence Shankland. The Northern Echo reports that Sunderland have offered the out of contract player a deal, but that the Hoops, Hearts and Portsmouth are also interested.
Now, there is no doubting Shankland’s goalscoring abilities. He scored 34 goals for the Honest Men last season. However, that was in the Championship.
Can he make step-up?
The question that would have to be asked is – could he make the step-up in class if he joined the Hoops?
That will be at the forefront of Neil Lennon’s mind as he contemplates a move for the player. The Hoops do need another striker.
At the moment, the only two strikers at the club are Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard. That will no do for a season, so the Hoops will need to add another striker to the squad.
Seems to be under consideration
Will Shankland be that player? He certainly seems to be under consideration. If he had scored that many goals for a team in the Premiership, there is no doubt that the Hoops would sign the player.
However, there is a gulf in class between the Premiership and the Championship. Few players have managed to score lots of goals in both leagues.
Could Shankland buck the trend and become one of those players in a Celtic shirt? Only time will tell.
