Celtic set to make healthy profit in Lewis Morgan sale

The offer Celtic have accepted for winger Lewis Morgan is “considerably more” than the fee we shelled out for him two years ago – according to a report.

STV have published some more details on the surprising story that could see Morgan join David Beckham’s new MLS franchise Inter Miami. They reckon that we will make a healthy profit on the man who joined for £250,000 from St. Mirren in January 2018.

The fact this move has come out of nowhere suggests that we simply received an offer for the winger that far outweighed his valuation. The surprise nature of his departure is also highlighted by some Neil Lennon comments from last year.

Lennon comments suggest something changed

In late November, following Morgan’s goal in the home win over Rennes, Lennon declared that we wouldn’t be looking to let him leave this month.

“We’re not in the mood to do that,” the gaffer said of reports that he would be moving on. (Daily Record)

“He is an important part of the squad. You can see what he brings at times, he just needs to believe in himself a little bit more and that performance against Rennes will do him the world of good in terms of his confidence.”

Those comments are about as concrete as you’re going to find from Neil Lennon. He clearly felt Morgan had a future at the club so something must have changed.

Making profit on Morgan is good business for Celtic

Perhaps it was his abject performance in the Betfred Cup final against Rangers and in Cluj. He didn’t feature after the Romanian trip after all. More likely is that the money we’ve received from the heavily-backed MLS side was just too good to turn down given the player’s status in the squad.

Make no mistake about it, Lennon will have signed off on Morgan’s departure. That, and STV’s report, suggests that we simply received a good offer and felt it was right to accept.

Not every player can be sold for millions of pounds like Kieran Tierney and Moussa Dembele. Some just don’t make the grade and have to be moved on. This is one such case.
