Why Celtic should make Kristoffer Ajer vice-captain this summer

Celtic could make a statement this summer by handing the vice-captaincy to Kristoffer Ajer. The 21-year-old has all the attributes to be our future leader once Scott Brown moves on so it would make sense to give him a taster now.

Ajer has only missed 18 minutes of football since Neil Lennon rejoined the club. He started all 14 matches under the Northern Irishman and was only withdrawn once – in the closing stages of the win at Dens Park.

It’s fair to say that Lennon likes him so is now the time to give him another responsibility?

Growing in stature

Ajer is a much improved player and man from this time last year. The Norwegian appeared in more games than ever during the season and he seemed to improve with every passing match.

His performance in the 2-1 victory over Rangers in March might be career defining. Ajer was immense throughout the derby at Celtic Park, arguably winning us the match with a last ditch tackle in the closing minutes.

He will undoubtedly be one of our key men both next season and after that too. Scott Brown is likely to play less and less games as time goes on so it would make sense to find a secondary captain that can fill in when he’s not around.

Mikael Lustig, the usual vice-captain, is set to leave the club this summer while Kieran Tierney hasn’t played too much football lately. Ajer looks like the perfect solution for the team. He would almost certainly relish the role too.
