Celtic should be urging Rangers to sign Italian veteran Claudio Marchisio.
The Gers are reportedly interested in the multi-time Serie A winner according to RMC Sport. He is now a free agent and on the lookout for a new club this season.
However, Celtic must be quietly confident that he will go in the same route as all the other older flops at Ibrox.
Celtic squad must be rubbing hands together with Marchisio reports
If Rangers miraculously get their man then it’s going to be hailed by a coup by the media.
Italian journalist, Nima Tavallaey Roodsari, told Rocksport:”As far as Rangers go, I know there is interest in Marchisio.
“That I do know – I’ve had it confirmed.
“They’ve contacted his people, his agent, to see if there’s an interest.”
On paper, the 33-year-old is a fantastic signing for Rangers due to his back catalogue of trophies.
Of course, the fact that he is an ageing player who isn’t what he once was will go in one ear and out another. Nine games last season for Zenit St Petersburg is all the Italian international could manage. He is a man without a club who hasn’t played a first team match in many months.
The positive is that he is an older head and perhaps the leader that Rangers are needing on the field.
But, he is taking away a spot from a promising midfielder and the wages will suck them dry for no reason.
As rivals, watching your rivals panic buy must be a confidence booster to get the job done.
Midfielder may go in direction of other elderly flops
Celtic fans are all to familiar of this similar stunt pulled by past Rangers teams. In recent years Joey Barton, Filip Senderos and Clint Hill have all failed to make impact.
They were sent back down south with their tales tucked between their legs.
Marchisio may be the next one in the line that will underestimate Scottish football. However, Mr Roodsari did state that Rangers are probably not going to sign him.
On the off chance he does, then Scott Brown will eat him up as he did with others before him.
