With Celtic reportedly having been offered £4.5million last summer for Dedryck Boyata, it’s not something we should look back on with regret.
The Belgian has been constantly linked with a move to Hertha Berlin. With his contract up at the end of the season, Boyata is free to speak to whoever he wants regarding a departure.
But the Scottish Sun believes that the Hoops were offered as much as £4.5m last year for the Belgian. This was apparently also from Berlin, who clearly have been courting Boyata for some time.
This could easily open up the question as to why we didn’t cash in. After all, we would’ve made a massive profit on him compared to losing him for nothing.
But, at the end of the day, Celtic have gotten great use out of Boyata this season. He’s been a huge part of the treble treble charge. So far this term, he’s made a stunning 34 appearances for Celtic. 20 of those games have ended in clean sheets too.
Injuries have struck Celtic hard
And let’s not forget the injury crisis we’ve had this season, particularly at the back. Jozo Simunovic and Filip Benkovic have had their injury concerns this season. If we had lost Boyata and failed to bring in a viable replacement, our season could be looking a lot worse.
For a side still going for a third consecutive treble, Boyata has been a huge influence on it. Yes, he’s made some costly mistakes in Europe over the years. He can also certainly be replaced for good money, but a treble treble is certainly worth a lot more than £4.5m to our club.
Boyata will likely leave this summer, with no reason to believe he’ll stay at Parkhead beyond the end of the season. And should it be to Berlin, then there should certainly be no regrets flying about Celtic Park,
Boyata has plenty of faults, but he’s had a massive impact domestically this term. And if he’s played the last game for the club, then he can be satisfied with his contribution over the last nine months or so.
