Celtic sign "highly-rated" Joey Dawson; follows in Gary Hooper's footsteps
Celtic have announced the signing of “highly-rated” forward Joey Dawson from Scunthorpe United. (Celtic FC)
The 18-year-old has agreed a three-year deal with the club and will join the Reserves ahead of their Lowland League campaign this season.
The teenager is a record-breaker, having become the youngest ever player to play for Scunthorpe, aged just 16 in 2019.
Celtic revealed the news in a press release, and included some quotes from Dawson.
He said: “I feel a bit overwhelmed. Looking around the stadium, you can sense the magnitude of the club and it’s one of the biggest clubs in Europe without a doubt.
“After seeing the facilities and meeting the people, it’s an honour to be here and I’m looking forward to getting started now.
“One thing that enticed me after talking to Chris McCart, Willie McStay and Tommy McIntyre was the winning mentality of this club and it’s something I want to be a part of.”
“That can only breed success and it’s definitely something I’m looking forward to.”
Dawson follows in Gary Hooper’s footsteps
Young English striker. Scunthorpe to Celtic. Hmmm, sounds familiar.
It’s 11 years since Gary Hooper switched Lincolnshire for Glasgow. Hooper may have been slightly older at 22, but Dawson really doesn’t have to look far for some inspiration.
Hooper only actually spent three seasons at Celtic, but is regarded as one of the better strikers we have had at the club this century.
He netted 75 goals in that time. If Dawson can have half the impact when he makes his first-team debut, we’ll have secured another bargain.
Welcome to Celtic, Joey.
