The 2019 PFA Scotland Player of the Year awards take place next month.
The best of what Scottish football has to offer will be up for debate amongst the players themselves. For PFA awards, it’s the players who vote, and this year, they should only be choosing one man – Callum McGregor.
He’s been the standout player in Scotland this season. In a sensational number of games played, McGregor has racked up 60 appearances for club and country. Come the end of the campaign, he’s likely to have featured in 67. That equates to two seasons worth for many players.

But it’s not just his numbers either, it’s the control in which McGregor has over midfields in Scotland. He can break up play, turn defence into attack, and distribute the ball effortlessly.
He’s also becoming exceptional at weaving past players when he chooses to. When Celtic are on song, it’s usually because McGregor has turned up and is exerting control in the engine room.
There hasn’t been a more influential midfielder in Scotland this season, and we’re including Broony in that.
Celtic a different machine without McGregor
In the one instance Celtic played without McGregor in midfield (Ibrox, December 29th), the Hoops were all over the place and lacking in any sort of momentum through their central midfield. That wasn’t a one-off either. Celtic badly miss McGregor when he isn’t playing, and that’s been proven.
But don’t be surprised if he doesn’t get it. Alfredo Morelos has scored 29 goals this season, and it wouldn’t be surprising if many centre backs in the country voted for him (outside of ours, of course).

Despite the fact McGregor hasn’t been sent off once, is a more rounded footballer, and has played 12 more games than him, it may not matter come the vote. It’s one of the downsides of players actually voting, as sometimes the outstanding candidate may not be chosen. McGregor only has six goals this season, and it will be interesting to see how big a factor that plays.
But who can truly look themselves in the mirror this season and say they’ve performed better than McGregor in Scotland?
Come the dinner on May 5th, there’s only one deserving winner. Hopefully, the playing staff in Scottish football do the right thing and ensure McGregor takes the award for a simply stunning campaign.
