Celtic star Liam Scales will make his senior debut for the Republic of Ireland tonight going up against Greece in Dublin.
Scales has been selected in the Irish starting eleven for the Euro 2024 qualifying clash and will face off against former Celtic hero Giorgos Giakoumakis, who starts in the Greek attack.
The Irish defender has been in superb form for the Bhoys in recent weeks, even showing up well at the elite level in the UEFA Champions League. He’s made eight starts in total under Brendan Rodgers.
Given he was on the verge of a return to Aberdeen during the summer transfer window, it’s an extraordinary rise.
The opportunities have been fully earned, however. As Rodgers pointed out after another accomplished display against Kilmarnock, his form has fully merited his inclusion.
The same can be said for being handed his first cap tonight. Scales has long been on the fringes of the Irish squad and has been selected for international camps on a number of occasions.
The 25-year-old starts in a back three that includes Nathan Collins and former Celtic player Shane Duffy. He’ll be relishing the chance to represent his country and hopefully he can produce a strong performance.

Scales is expected to retain his place in the Celtic team alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers after the international break, so it would be fantastic to see him come through tonight’s test with more confidence.
Celtic fans everywhere will be wishing him luck and hoping he can again show why he’s had such a boost in profile over the last few months. Regardless of how the match goes, it’ll be a very proud night for the Irishman and his family.
