Celtic star Fraser Forster has revealed that he has not given up hope on more playing for England – and he is correct not to.

“I’d love to be a part of the England squad” he said, as reported by the Herald.

“I’d always want that to be an ambition of mine. The main thing is I work hard and try to perform well here.”

Forster has made six apperances for England, the last coming in 2016. The reason that Forster should not give up on his international ambitions is that arguably on his day he is as good a goalkeeper as any of the players that have been in goals recently for England.

When you look at the mistakes that Jordan Pickford has made, it can be argued that Forster would not have made similar errors.

However, one thing that might have to be taken into account is that English players are rarely picked for the national side when they play in Scotland.

Europa League performances could give player a chance

That is unfortunate, but it is just how Scottish football is viewed in England. However, Forster could perhaps change that notion with a series of good performances in the Europa League. It should also be remembered that he made his England debut whilst still a Celtic player.

Forster will be hoping that England boss Gareth Southgate or a member of his staff will be watching the Hoops when they take on Lazio in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Should Forster turn in a man of the match display, it could enhance his chances of returning to the England squad. He has been out of the spotlight for a while after losing his place in the Southampton team last season.

However, a good series of performances for Celtic could see Forster back in the public eye for club and country once more.
