Celtic winger Lewis Morgan has failed to gain an automatic promotion place with Sunderland in League One.
The Black Cats’ place in the playoffs was confirmed with a poor 2-1 defeat at Fleetwood Town last night. They still have one final game to play at Southend United before the league is wrapped up.
The highest Morgan and Sunderland can finish now is third place. That will only happen if they win at Southend and Portsmouth fail to beat Accrington Stanley at home at the same time.

It’s a disappointment for Morgan, who has recently been impressing the Sunderland fans. The failure to gain promotion automatically doesn’t mainly fall on Morgan’s shoulders, however. He’s done his bit in recent times, but the squad Jack Ross has built just didn’t have the quality to overtake Barnsley in second place.
It’s worth noting that Morgan did notch another assist against Fleetwood Town last night too. It’s his fourth since joining Ross’ side in January.
Morgan has now started the last seven league matches for Sunderland too. He’s becoming a valuable member of the team, and it couldn’t have come at a more opportune moment to shine.
Sunderland’s promotion would suit us all
If we’re in need of giving Morgan more game-time on loan next season, a Sunderland promotion would be ideal. It’s likely that they would still be interested in him given his recent form, and experience of the Championship would be ideal for Morgan.

There is plenty of work to be done first though. Sunderland could take on either Charlton Athletic, Doncaster Rovers, or Peterborough United depending on where all three sides finish the campaign.
But the winger could also easily be wanted back at Parkhead too. There’s been no update on the Scott Sinclair contract situation. It’s still a possibility he leaves the club at the end of the season. Therefore, Morgan could have a chance to compete for that position.

He’s hardly everyone’s first choice, however, but that’s a discussion for later. It’s disappointing to see he’s missed out on automatic promotion, which would surely have been the goal for Sunderland in pre-season.
But he can still make himself a real hero in the coming weeks as the League One playoffs get underway.
