Celtic captain Callum McGregor has hailed manager Brendan Rodgers as a ‘master tactician’ ahead of the new season, stating that he sees the same qualities in him now that marked him out as so valuable during his first spell at the club.
McGregor has been there and done it when it comes to finding success under Rodgers. The midfielder is going to be a key part of instilling the new boss’ culture and way of working into the current squad.
The captain already sees positive signs of players buying into what Rodgers is selling. The approach and messaging from the manager are already having an impact on the squad.
He said [Daily Record]: “It’s been very similar. We had a meeting really early on with the non-international guys and then it was the same as soon as we came in. There was a powerpoint about understanding and underlining the principles of what’s been good about us and what we believe we can do better.
“It’s been that same methodical approach, calm and incisive and that kind of information which makes people sit back and really take notice of and try to learn. I think that’s one of the best things about him, he tries to help everybody and tries to teach them about the game.
“He’s a master tactician and if you really go and pick his brain then there’s some wonderful information in there and he’s so good at getting it across to the guys as well. That’s another part of the game that we can always get better. The fundamental thing is always the football.”

We’re all about to see how this transfers into competitive games. However, the signs do look positive so far and you can see a gradual improvement in the team even across pre-season.
The true test will be the first weeks of the campaign and then that foray into the UEFA Champions League, but McGregor clearly feels Celtic are well primed for what’s ahead.
After the exit of such a successful manager in June, it’s heartening to hear there is real stability behind the scenes and progression towards even more trophies.
