Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley has been called up to the Danish national team squad for the first time today, for their upcoming match against San Marino.
O’Riley had initially missed out on the squad for this international window. However, Kasper Dolberg has dropped out of contention and the Bhoy will get his big chance to impress manager Kasper Hjulmand.
The Celtic midfielder was already in Denmark to watch their 3-1 win over Kazakhstan last night and he’ll now make the trip to San Marino for Tuesday night’s qualifier.
O’Riley is English by birth but qualified for Denmark due to his grandmother. He was included in Denmark U21 matches when he was age-eligible, making six appearances, scoring two goals and assisting twice.
He’s been in brilliant form under Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers so far this season and leads the club scoring charts with Kyogo Furuhashi – he’s netted five times in 11 starts.
The midfielder has consistently spoken about his desire to represent Denmark throughout his career so this is a fantastic breakthrough for a player who is still just 22.
Playing football for Denmark will only aid his development and, if he performs well, increase his value to Celtic as an asset.

O’Riley recently committed his long-term future to the Bhoys and we are set to get the best of him over the next year or two before decisions will be made on a potential sale.
Celtic have already reportedly rejected fees of as much as £10m for the player, with a bid coming from Leeds United late in the summer window. Clearly, the club feel he has lots more to give and, ultimately, could be sold for a lot more money.
