Celtic’s hero last night Mikey Johnston stated that the young Hoops are better than Rangers after the Glasgow Cup final success.

The under-20s slugged it out in an entertaining battle at Celtic Park last night. Goals from Jack Aitchison and Johnston had Celtic cruising going into the break. But two stunning finishes from Rangers’ Glenn Middleton pulled Rangers level going into the final five minutes.

In the last seconds, however, centre-back Robbie Deas thundered home a stunning right-footed volley to win it for the Hoops.

Johnston played a key part and was too good for Rangers with a stunning performance. And the Celtic youngster was full of confidence post-match too. Speaking to Celtic TV, Johnston expressed the belief his teammates have.

“We all believe we’re better than them, so getting the result – it’s buzzing.

“I’ve been practicing them (free-kicks) yesterday. Everyone was like ‘nah nah you’re not hitting free-kicks’. I’ve been good in training so I thought I’ll just try it. I’ve been practicing the same technique and kept doing it. I’m just happy it went in. I wasn’t surprised (when it hit the net).

“As soon as he (Deas) scored I was like ‘oh my god it’s an absolute screamer’. It was a great goal, a great goal. He’s won it for the boys.”

Revenge for the youngsters

Last night was massive for the under-20s. The young Hoops suffered a devastating 2-0 loss to Rangers just several weeks ago in the reserve league. A Middleton double at Firhill has given Rangers the initiative in the title race.

Therefore, winning the Glasgow Cup offered some real revenge to the Celtic youngsters. And it was fully deserved too.

Make no mistake, the scoreline was massively flattering towards Rangers. Celtic had this game by the scruff of the neck for 75 minutes. Ewan Henderson and Grant Savoury both missed big chances to make it 3-0 and 3-1 respectively. On another day, Celtic would’ve cruised to victory here no bother.

Johnston was the star of the show, however. His trickery and footwork were sublime, and he proved too classy for this level of football.

But the likes of Deas, Aitchison, Henderson, Armstrong Oko-Flex, and Barry Coffey all turned in terrific displays too. It was a great night all-round for the youngsters, and the cup success was fully deserved in the end.
