Celtic superstar Ryan Christie has explained why he decided to leave Twitter.
Has there ever been a red card more criticised than the one Christie received at Livingston several weeks ago? It effectively cost us three points on the day, but Celtic have long since moved on.
After the game, Christie decided to delete his Twitter account. This came after hearing about comments criticising him on the social media platform.
It doesn’t really take a rocket scientist to explain why Christie deleted his account in the first place. But after being pressed on it by the BBC, he decided to finally open up on what made him take such drastic action. Take a look at the video below:
Christie said:
“There was a natural reaction after the game, obviously. I apologised to the boys. A lot of people were frustrated with the red card, as was I.
“It’s not like I went home and started scrolling through tweets. I’m clever enough to stay away from that. With social media nowadays, it’s virtually impossible to keep it completely away from you.
“There’s people messaging you saying ‘this person said that, this person said this’. I think it was at that point I realised, for us, sometimes it can be another platform for people to come at you so I thought it best to delete the Twitter.”

It was perhaps the first time in his Celtic career that Christie had been seriously criticised by some in the Hoops support. It made it even more bewildering considering he was one of the heroes of the game against Cluj just several days beforehand.
And now we can hopefully all close the door on this issue. It was one red card. Three weeks later we’re all still hearing him have to talk about it.
Sure, the media may think there was still an avenue to explore with Christie’s opinion on things. But it’s time to drop the subject and move on. He’s done more than enough in a Celtic jersey to earn a pass on this.
It seems doubtful that we’ll see him back on Twitter anytime soon. He deleted it for a reason, and clearly the Hoops favourite is happy with his decision.
But now he won’t be thinking about social media. All eyes will be on how he performs against Lazio. This is one of the highest-quality opposition teams Christie will have faced in a Celtic shirt. It’s new heights for him on a personal level tonight.
And considering he’s still suspended for the trip to Pittodrie on Sunday, here’s hoping he gets back on form with a positive display at Parkhead tonight. It would most certainly finally put an end to daft questions on his Livi red card.
