Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis' classy gesture after top class header
Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis decided to dedicate his exploits last night to injured Greece teammate Dimitros Limnios.
Giakoumakis managed to bag his first goal of the international camp with a bullet header to break the deadlock against Kosovo. The goal took Greece en route to a 2-0 win as they made it 4 wins out of 4 in their Nations League group.
It’s been the perfect camp for Giakoumakis, who started the first 2 games before coming on from the bench in the latter 2. He’s made a big impact over the course of the camp and can now rest up ahead of pre-season.
However, he made sure to dedicate his big moment yesterday to Limnios, who suffered a nasty cruciate ligament rupture against Cyprus.
As quoted by Greek outlet Gazzetta after the game, Giakoumakis said: “The victory is dedicated to Limnios who was the big unfortunate of the mission. We wish him a speedy recovery. I’m sure he will return stronger than ever. I needed the goal, I was looking forward to this moment and I am happy.
“In the first games we could have scored more. I really wanted the goal. Scoring with your club is nice, but with the national team it’s special and different.
“I’m very happy that after a long time we had so many fans on our side. We thank them for that. The province always shows that the fans are behind the national team. I hope that in the big cities the people are also with us.”
Giorgos Giakoumakis finally gets his just rewards as Celtic striker left delighted
Giakoumakis has put in a power of work over the international period for Greece. If anyone deserved his big moment yesterday then it was him.
And you couldn’t help but be wowed at the actual goal itself. Giakoumakis managed to put some incredible power on the header to flick it into the far corner. It’s some way to announce yourself onto the international scene.
It would’ve felt like an injustice if Giorgos ended up going through the entire camp without a goal. He’s been influential in the final third for Greece and there’s a reason he was continuously selected by Gus Poyet.
But getting that goal puts the cherry on top for all of his hard work. Giakoumakis sees himself as a goalscorer, so he’ll want that to follow him into his national team duties.
Now, he can rest up with Greece’s summer matches coming to an end. Giakoumakis’ side managed to win all 4 matches without even conceding a goal. A superb return for them given it’s a new era under Poyet.
Hopefully, Giakoumakis’ goal yesterday can spur him on to even greater heights when he returns to pre-season.
