Celtic striker Patryk Klimala has been called up to the Poland under-21 squad for their upcoming matches against Estonia and Russia.
Klimala posted an image on his social media stories to announce that he had been given the call for the matches scheduled for September 4th and 8th (The Herald). This comes after an impressive start to the season in which he’s netted against Nice, Hibernian (x2), and Hamilton respectively.
The Polish striker has yet to start a competitive game for Neil Lennon this season. However, in both of Celtic’s competitive matches so far, he’s come off the bench and looked sharp.
The former Jagiellonia Bialystok hitman will be hoping to add to an already impressive start to his under-21 international career. Klimala has two goals in his first five competitive games at under-21 level (Transfermarkt).
Goals away to Latvia and Russia have helped shoot Poland up to second in their European Championship qualifying table. Russia sit four points ahead of them having played a game more (UEFA)
An opportune time for Klimala to shine
This is terrific news for Klimala, who’s starting to become a regular for the young Poles. He’s started all five of their Euro qualifying matches and looks to be a key part of their side.
It also comes at a good time in his club career too. Celtic have just completed the signing of £5million man Albian Ajeti (Sky Sports). Naturally, that takes some of the focus away from Klimala.
Impressing and scoring in matches against Estonia and Russia would be a fine way to keep the spotlight on him.
It’s vital for Klimala, already trying to stay ahead of Leigh Griffiths in the pecking order, to keep making an impression on the Celtic supporters as well as Neil Lennon.
Odsonne Edouard only increased his own reputation with his stunning form for France at under-21 level last season. The same can happen for Klimala if he stars for Poland.
Regardless, we wish him all the best in any case. So long as Klimala comes away from the match with two victories, he’ll be back with his confidence brimming.
