Celtic supporters hope club can strike deal for Martinez and Maloney

Celtic supporters are clear: Roberto Martinez and Shaun Maloney are top candidates to replace Neil Lennon.

Lennon, who resigned from the club last night, has created a vacuum of speculation in his wake. The likes of Eddie Howe, Frank Lampard and Lucien Favre have been touted. But one big-name target of that ilk is the popular choice with supporters. Or, rather, two names.

Shaun Maloney, a former Celtic player over two spells, has appeared more frequently on Sportscene, and in Scottish media more generally. The assistant to Roberto Martinez at Belgium, Maloney has excellent coaching pedigree. Having already coached at the club’s reserves level under Tommy McIntyre, Maloney knows the club’s set-up.

Martinez is a longer shot, however. The former Everton and Wigan manager was a surprise choice for Belgium’s national team. Alongside coaches like Maloney and Thierry Henry, he immediately surrounded himself with international experience. It’s worked; Belgium are currently the top-ranked nation in Men’s Football [FIFA].

Interestingly, Martinez is familiar with Celtic’s squad. Ahead of a meeting with Scotland, he picked out James Forrest as a talented player. With Maloney in his ear, Martinez will surely know about Celtic’s supporters and the glorious stadium.

The attack-minded coach would certainly revitalise Celtic going forward. But given that he currently works with the likes of Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne, the Bhoys represent a step down in terms of the talent he’d be coaching.
