Celtic supporters and Chick Young don’t have the best relationship.

The long-tenured BBC reporter and pundit is often associated with Rangers. Perhaps that’s because of Only an Excuse, or publishing a book about the Ibrox club early in his career. In any case, the Hoops faithful rarely enjoy input from the veteran football journalist

The “St Mirren supporter” is often a touch off-the-wall with his Celtic takes. However, he turned the patter dial up to 11 last night on the BBC’s Sportsound Podcast.

“The one man who would’ve been salvation for Celtic was staring them in the face. And the work he’s doing at Ross County has proven that.

“John Hughes, where Celtic are at the moment, would’ve been an absolute perfect fit.”

Celtic supporters on Chick Young’s wild suggestion

Unsurprisingly, Celtic fans had a thing or two to say about this.

In a world where Steven Naismith made more sense about the Bhoys’ ambitions, it was only natural that the Hoops faithful had a word or two to offer.

A word or two, indeed. But not all voices were dissenting.

For what it’s worth…

In fairness to John Hughes, he’s a ‘Celtic man’, and his teams generally play decent football. For me, he’s one of many managers where you wonder how well he’d do at a bigger club.

He got Falkirk to a Scottish Cup Final and was an absolute success for the majority of his time at Hibs and Caley Thistle. Yogi has taken un-fancied clubs to success in cup competitions, and his tactical outlook would be enjoyed at Celtic Park.

Maybe with a decent budget and a more impressive infrastructure behind him, he could be a top manager. It seems unlikely, mind you. To his credit, he’s at the very least astute, and gets his teams playing the right way.

Still, I don’t think he’s anything like a “salvation”, and it’s pretty disrespectful to Ross County, in truth. I’d find it unpalatable if I was a Staggies fan – Hughes only joined the club in December.

It’s hard to know what to make of this. Is Hughes a vastly underrated coach? Or, perhaps more likely, is this Chick Young tacitly sticking the boot in, making a comment about our slipping standards?

Meanwhile, Chris Sutton has had his say on the strength of Neil Lennon’s character.
