Latest Celtic departure is strange, but shouldn't put club off MLS market

Celtic officially announced another departure today.

Manny Perez, signed alongside Andrew Gutman in January 2019 [Sky Sports], spoke passionately about wanting to play for the Bhoys at Celtic Park. Ultimately, the Celtic dream for him and his American colleague Gutman will not be met, with Perez taking off to Portland.

The Bhoys announced this latest departure in a rather blunt manner earlier today.

It’s an odd series of events. For Celtic to sign two American players, both highly-rated at College level, then never play them competitively. Earlier, we discussed whether it was a PR stunt that went awry. Seemingly, there was no foresight in terms of work permits, nor a progression to the first-team.

While the majority of supporters won’t lose any sleep, given that they didn’t see Perez play, it’s still a shame. Clearly in love with the club, and as a player who specialised in a problem area for Celtic, the MLS-bound utility man was never given a fair shot at Paradise.

Celtic supporters react to latest transfer news

Needless to say, the board didn’t come out of this looking particularly great.

Big clubs make signings that don’t work out, and that’s just how it is. However, the nature of Celtic’s recruitment over the last few years means that supporters are right to question what happened here.
