Ange Postecoglou wants his Celtic players to play noughts and cross with bibs.

If that’s the only thing you take away from Celtic’s training video, posted this afternoon, then that’s not bad. But you’re missing the bigger picture. For the first time in a long time, we’re seeing some frankly unusual, potentially innovative training techniques from a hands-on new boss.

The players seem to be loving it. Vasilis Barkas saves made the highlight reel, there are a raft of young players, Ismaila Soro and Odsonne Edouard are there, too. The vibes; off the scale. And while it’s not the entire Celtic squad present as of yet, there’s more than enough there to get fans onside.

As, it turns out, they were. For one thing, the absence of an actual football was a hallmark of the training footage from 20-21. Yet, the majority of players never quite looked fully fit. Whether there’s a Covid caveat and the lack of a proper pre-season to be considered there is your call to make. These days, though, we’re seeing something new.

As Postcoglou took notes and barked instructions, any cliché talk of a “gruelling pre-season”, running laps and all the rest seemed the furthest thing from the coach’s mind. While it looks intense, there’s also an overwhelmingly positive atmosphere on display from Lennoxtown.

Tracksuited and booted, the new Celtic manager seems to be able to combine high-intensity with actual enjoyment. If this is the day job, then it might take less convincing to keep some of our stars beyond the summer.
