Celtic target Birger Meling has given his agent a clear instruction, according to Norwegian press.

The Rosenborg left-back has long been linked with a move to the Scottish champions this summer as Neil Lennon aims to replace Kieran Tierney following his move to Arsenal.

Earlier this week, the Scottish Sun reported that the Hoops had cast an eye over the 24-year-old in a recent Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Zagreb. Meling’s side were eliminated form the competition by the Croatian outfit on Tuesday evening and now the full-back has reportedly given a clear instruction to his agent Bjorn Tore Kvarme.

Norwegian outlet VG say that Meling is likely to be of interest to “foreign clubs” in the coming days. They report that he has told his agent that he only wants to know about certain offers and that nothing will have come to fruition on that front yet.

Not much else is known about the 24-year-old’s future nor his current state of mind.

Would Meling like to hear about Celtic from his agent?

It’s really difficult to gauge where Celtic are in their hunt for a new left-back. The club have kept their cards close to their chests on the majority of deals so far this summer, with the David Turnbull outburst the notable exception.

It’s hard to imagine us signing both Kilmarnock’s Greg Taylor and Meling so it seems like a shootout between the two. The Daily Record report that we recently bid for Scotland international Taylor so that would suggest that he’s top of the pile at the moment.

In a funny sort of way, it probably doesn’t matter whether it’s Taylor or Meling we move for. Both are relatively young and would fit the overall signing policy of the club. Both have international experience and have similar playing styles. Both would also likely be keen to take the step-up to Celtic while wages should be of no issue either.

Fans would probably accept both at this late stage of the transfer window too. The supporters are getting more and more frustrated with every passing day and they’ll just hope that the club are able to bring in some sort of adequate replacement for Tierney.

Time will tell who that man is.
