Celtic target Kasper Dolberg’s disastrous move proved to be the ‘final straw’ for Ajax director

Celtic’s summer transfer window feels like a while ago now.

But for most Hoops fans, the memory of it will remain. A wave of Celtic fan protests has made it absolutely clear that supporters have had enough.

Just months after taking Bayern Munich to added time of the second leg in the Champions League, Brendan Rodgers’ squad was left grossly under-prepared for a crucial play-off against Kairat Almaty. Fans don’t reminding of what happened in that.

Rodgers’ Honda Civic comments made his feelings on the window absolutely clear, and he described it as leaving him with an ’empty’ feeling. Amid internal disputes, he resigned from his role last month.

One of the targets pursued was Kasper Dolberg, and it’s fair to say that his move to Ajax hasn’t gone to plan.

Dolberg was prolific at Anderlecht, and earmarked by Celtic as a potential replacement for Adam Idah.

But the move stalled and the striker’s head was turned by former club Ajax, who he joined for ten million euros.

It hasn’t been a fairytale return so far.

Dolberg is, remarkably, yet to score a goal for Ajax. He has struggled with injuries, but this remains a damning stat.

Danny Blind has announced his decision to step down as supervisory director at Ajax, remaining in the role until a successor is found.

And according to Dutch journalist Lentin Goodijk via Voetbalzone, his decision was partially fuelled by Dolberg’s transfer.

The ill-fated appointment of John Heitinga, who was sacked a fortnight ago, as well as the loan signing of James McConnell from Liverpool have also been named as factors.

The Dutch giants are fourth in the Eredivisie, eleven points behind leaders PSV already.

Heitinga was appointed to replace Francesco Farioli, who resigned after an almighty collapse saw them throw away last season’s title despite having a comfortable lead with six games to go.

They would probably take Farioli back now, given that he’s now working wonders at Porto.

Where are other Celtic summer targets now?

Celtic targeted another Dane, Jakob Breum, in the window too. Breum is a key player at Go Ahead Eagles and hasn’t played since being injured in their upset win against Aston Villa.

Striker target Louis Munteanu has had rumours of a move to FCSB quashed by the club’s director, and he too is struggling for goals this season.

Jamie Vardy ended up making a stunning move to Cremonese – he scored against Juventus a few weeks ago, and is living the dream out in Italy.

Two other targets from the last week of the window were Jesurun Rak-Sakyi and David Datro Fofana, who have both made strong starts to their subsequent careers in Turkey.
