Celtic target Rekeem Harper’s future takes reported twist

Rekeem Harper’s future looks set to be resolved in the near future, and it’s not good news for Celtic.

According to local source the Birmingham Mail, talks with new West Brom manager Slaven Bilic may have proven profitable for WBA. Harper is reportedly edging closer to committing his future to the Hawthorns club.

This comes after weeks of being linked with a potential move to Parkhead. It had also been revealed that Celtic had him up in Glasgow for talks too (Football Scotland). But the delay in any move being done would’ve raised some eyebrows amongst the Celtic support.

The Birmingham Mail state that there remains an offer on the table from WBA to Harper. Even though it isn’t signed, they apparently believe talks have progressed well, and that West Brom are confident of keeping him.

Birmingham Mail have also credited Spurs, Juventus, and Liverpool with interest in Harper too. As it stands, however, this is a move that doesn’t look anywhere near like ending at Parkhead.

Does Luca Connell signing spell out Harper’s future?

Harper is effectively a flat out central midfielder. He’s a bit of an all-rounder, making a contribution going forward and at the back. But with the introduction of Connell to Parkhead, it’s not surprising to see a move for Harper slow up.

It is, of course, reasonable to also think that Youssouf Mulumbu’s departure opens up a space at the Celtic table. But in truth, we’re still packed with serious talent in Harper’s position. Connell will have his eyes on breaking through, and that will be hard enough trying to displace the likes of Scott Brown or Callum McGregor.

It’s also important not to forget the fact that Celtic still have Olivier Ntcham and Nir Bitton in their ranks too. Harper isn’t exactly a necessity to bring up to Glasgow.

In saying that, of course, this remains a deal that has no risk involved. Harper’s contract reportedly ran out with West Brom yesterday (Transfermarkt). If Celtic want to move for him, they could snap him up for nothing right this instant.

So it’s all about trusting the club with this one. Not many would be too disappointed if the Hoops didn’t move for the West Brom man. We have enough quality in his position as it is. Fans will likely be more concerned with what’s happening regarding a new right-back as well as where the future of Kieran Tierney sits.

But in terms of a deal for Harper, it doesn’t look as close as it did a month or so ago.
