Celtic today announced their arrival under Ange Postecoglou, and it’s time for Scottish football to start taking us seriously again.
Before today’s 6-0 hammering of Dundee at Celtic Park, there were still question marks over what the Hoops were capable of. That they had yet to truly recover from their form of last season. That the defeat at Hearts showed our weaknesses to the world were still present.
Whilst there are undoubted flaws in this Celtic side, it’s clear it’s on the right track. And today, Postecoglou managed to get the statement victory he’s needed since he took the job.
Every title-winning manager has a day like this. Ronny Deila managed a 6-2 home win against Dundee United in his first home league match. Brendan Rodgers took in a 5-0 win over Motherwell in his first domestic game at Parkhead too.
These are the kind of victories that make people sit up and take notice. The kind of wins that you can’t put down to one or two good moments in a game. This today was the complete performance, with no flaws you can truly pick out.
Celtic won the game 6-0. Could anyone have argued if it was double that? Celtic could easily have strolled out of Parkhead with a double-digit margin between them and the Taysiders.
Celtic fans know they’re onto something special under Ange Postecoglou if his vision is backed
Not that the Celtic fans needed convincing that Postecoglou is building something promising here. We’ve all seen the positive signs against Midtjylland and Jablonec. Going forward, Celtic have looked irresistible at times.
In recent weeks, it’s defensive lapses that have cost us. Whether it be poor distribution or a failure to deal with cross-balls. Our frailties have been there for all to see.
But even that wasn’t an issue today. Carl Starfelt and Stephen Welsh dominated their penalty area and ensured new shot-stopper Joe Hart didn’t have a save to make.
It was a festival of football at Celtic Park today. The kind of win that makes you forget any notion of waiting a few years before we can challenge for the title again.
Sure, we won’t get carried away. There’s a lot of work still to be done. But this was a big, big day in the Postecoglou era. The day he’s been waiting for since he arrived.
The day it all came together and Scottish football saw first hand the vision the new Hoops boss has for his team.
