Celtic told of Martin O’Neill’s next possible role that would stop ‘sack the board’ chants

Celtic can breathe easy knowing they have Martin O’Neill in charge, right now.

Brendan Rodgers left Celtic on October 27, and his replacement has yet to be announced, as O’Neill continues to hold the fort.

Usually, that would cause chaos, especially at a club like Celtic, where the supporters are so strongly opposed to the board.

But with Wilfried Nancy expected to be Celtic’s next manager, what’s going to happen to O’Neill once that new man is standing in the dugout?

Martin O’Neill’s next role when Celtic announces a new manager

Celtic fans have continued their protests against the board, and they won’t stop unless major changes are made.

However, on Hotline, Daily Record journalist Keith Jackson questioned whether the under-fire board members could give O’Neill a role to quieten the negative noise.

Jackson suggested that, when the official announcement of the new coach is made, a secondary part of that statement might also inform supporters about what their legendary coach will do next.

“Is there a rabbit out of the hat that could be pulled with Martin O’Neill?” said Jackson.

“Where people are demanding change at the board level. If Martin O’Neill were to take on some sort of role up the stairs, as part of the board.

“Does that placate people? I think it would. I think, right now, there is an absolute love-in for Martin O’Neill amongst the Celtic fans, and understandably so.

“So, if you were clever about things. If you moved people around a little bit. You said that Martin was part of the board.

“Then I think, right away, there will be real friction at anybody singing ‘sack the board’, if Martin O’Neill was part of that board. That might not be strategically the worst thing for Celtic.

“I wonder if there might be conversations to that end that have to take place this week. When they announce that Martin O’Neill is stepping down, and they have a new manager.

“It wouldn’t surprise me at all if there was a secondary part of that announcement, and here’s what Martin is going to do now, which is basically put a bomb bunker around the rest of the boardroom for the time being.”

The Celtic board trying to ’reunify’ the club under the new manager

If the next man through the door is Nancy, or anybody else. The fans will get behind them 100%.

But it’s going to come on the backdrop of continued protests against the board.

However, Jackson feels there could be ‘other intended strategies’, outside of O’Neill, to try and ‘reunify’ everyone.

“There might be other shifts,” added Jackson.

“Other intended strategies, in terms of announcements of personnel on the board. All designed to reunify the club. Bring the supporters back, and give the new manager the best possible start.”
