The Champions League will always be the huge testing ground where Celtic’s players will be judged.
Despite their dominance in Scotland and countless trophies and history, Celtic will always be benchmarked alongside Europe’s elite because of their considering spending power and quality of players compared to other teams in Scotland.
Whilst not many people will deny that Brendan Rodgers has an abundance of talent at his disposal, it is not often that many Celtic players are tipped to have the quality to go and play in any league in Europe.
And that is exactly what the new summer signing, Arne Engels, has been tipped to do.
Celtic’s midfield ‘luxury’
Engels dazzled the Celtic supporters with another fine display in last night’s 5-1 drubbing of Slovan Bratislava.
The Belgian was superb as he tucked away another penalty and created an assist to end Celtic’s winless opening day Champions League run.
And now, after last night’s performance, talent spotter, Jacek Kulig, has tipped Engels to have the ability to play in any league in Europe.
Kulig said, “Arne Engels had a stellar Champions League debut. 21 years of age. So underrated.
“He could easily play for a strong club in the top 5 leagues. Having both Engels and Paulo Bernardo in that box-to-box role is such a luxury for Celtic.”
Engels setting the bar at Celtic
When Matt O’Riley left Celtic for Brighton, many thought that Paulo Bernardo would be the natural replacement after his permanent move from Benfica.

And for a bit, it did look that way. That was until Engels was signed. A substitute appearance against Rangers was followed up by his first start against Hearts and the 21-year-old has done nothing but show his quality.
Bernardo now finds himself on the Celtic bench and after Engels’ performance last night, it looks like that’s where he will stay for now.
The Belgian has made himself undroppable already and it’s exciting to think what he will produce once he is fully settled in at Celtic over the next few months.
