Celtic took a look at Greg Taylor at the weekend

Celtic are reported to have taken a look at Kilmarnock left-back Greg Taylor over the weekend.

The Daily Record say that the Hoops sent scout Tosh McKinlay to cast an eye over the 21-year-old full-back. Taylor played the full match as the Ayrshire side went down to a surprising 2-0 defeat to Hamilton Accies in Lanarkshire.

The Record say that Taylor is a genuine candidate to replace Kieran Tierney at Celtic Park – after the full-back sealed a record-breaking £25million switch to Arsenal last week.

How much would Taylor cost Celtic?

Rough estimates suggest that Kilmarnock would be looking for around £1million for the left-back.

The only barometer of their desired fee thus far was a bid they booted out for German side Nurnberg. The Scottish Sun reported that the Bundesliga 2 side had an offer of £500,000 rejected at the start of July.

It’s reckoned that they would be looking for about double that to part with the Scotland international.

Would his signing appease Celtic fans?

The Hoops support seem pretty split if social media is anything to go by. Some fans would see Taylor as a good succession plan to Tierney. The defender shares a lot of Tierney’s traits and plays the game in an old-fashioned way much like the Arsenal man.

Celtic would be getting value for money at around £1million for a guy who’s already been capped by Scotland and is only going to improve over the next few years.

However, some Hoops fans want to see the club shelling out significant money on Tierney’s long-term replacement. Some have already written off summer signing Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo and they would now want to see a marquee recruit.

Brentford’s Rico Henry has been mentioned as a potential target and some fans would much prefer his reputation to that of a player playing in Scotland.

But that is perhaps unfair on Taylor. The youngster is one of the few players playing elsewhere in Scotland that could give it a go at Celtic. He possesses all of the ability and heart, and has performed well on the big stage in the past. He may actually make a pretty good replacement for Celtic’s recently departed favourite son.
