Celtic were better in one area under Wilfried Nancy than now, Si Ferry claims

Wilfried Nancy is already a thing of the past at Celtic.

But memories of his 33-day tenure are still very fresh in the memory.

After the Frenchman took over from Martin O’Neill, the team’s form took an immediate nosedive, at the worst possible time.

Nancy’s tactical recklessness and media handling compounded horrendous results, leading to his sacking after just eight games.

Few Hoops fans will have anything positive to say about the ex-Columbus Crew coach, but Si Ferry does.

What is the biggest difference you have noticed in this Celtic side under Martin O’Neill?

Si Ferry on Wilfried Nancy at Celtic

After Nancy’s sacking, O’Neill immediately returned, and the Hoops haven’t lost a game since.

It’s fair to say that the appointment was a massive mistake, given that it cost Paul Tisdale his job.

Ferry is not alone in being critical of recent performances under O’Neill, which have required the Hoops to score in the last-minute to salvage results.

On Open Goal, he even went as far as claiming: β€œThey were better in possession under Nancy, Celtic.

β€œIn possession, agree or disagree? [They were] terrible off the ball. Terrible off the ball. But on the ball? Better.”

Andy Halliday asked if Celtic should’ve kept the Frenchman, and Ferry admitted: β€œNo, you couldn’t keep him, could you f–k.

β€œYou couldn’t keep him, but in possession, better. Definitely.”

Paul Slane said: β€œThey haven’t been good in possession under Martin O’Neill this time around, have they?

β€œThat does really surprise me, given the level that Shaun [Maloney] has coached at.”

Ferry replied: β€œWhat level is that?”

Slane said: β€œBelgium.”

Ferry then asked: β€œDid they do well?

β€œI’m very surprised [that Celtic aren’t more dominant]. But it was like that the first time, as well, under Martin O’Neill, wasn’t it?

β€œIt wasn’t like they were dominating games of football. The St Mirren away game…”

What do you think is the main reason Wilfried Nancy couldn’t buy a win as Celtic manager? πŸ€”

Wilfried Nancy’s ill-fated Celtic spell

Nancy’s start to life at Celtic was daunting on paper – and in the end, the worst-case scenario was exactly what played out.

After O’Neill’s run of wins in his interim spell, Nancy lost 2-1 to Hearts, 3-0 to Roma and 3-1 to St Mirren in his first week.

This was bruising enough, and after a 1-0 defeat to Dundee United, fans were already calling for him to be sacked.

Wins over Aberdeen and Livingston weathered the storm and showed better signs on the pitch – but in a crucial week of games against Motherwell and Rangers, two more defeats sealed Nancy’s fate.
