Celtic were "close" to signing Arsenal's Emiliano Martinez, says Kieran Tierney
Kieran Tierney says that Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was close to joining Celtic on loan.
The Argentinian stalwart made a name for himself at the end of the recent English season, starting the last 11 games and helping his side to the FA Cup title alongside former Hoops defender Tierney.
However, the 27-year-old wasn’t always a favourite with the Gunners, after six loan spells threatened to wreck his career.
Martinez played for the likes of Wolves, Getafe and Reading during a crazy eight year stint, and now Tierney has revealed that Celtic were very nearly added to that list.
“For the last ten years he’s been out (on loan) about seven or eight times,” he said during his Open Goal interview. (17 mins)
“He was close to signing for Celtic on loan as well. He said Celtic had been in touch with him.
“But he’s come in now and done brilliant.”
Could Celtic look at similar Martinez loan signing this summer?
Given that Martinez has been at Arsenal since 2012, his potential move to Celtic could have come under Neil Lennon, Brendan Rodgers or Ronny Deila.
It’s hard to work out exactly when the interest was there, but we certainly missed a trick given his recent displays for the Emirates side.
Many may still be pondering whether Neil Lennon’s current side could do with another body in the position.
This summer we lost both Fraser Forster and Craig Gordon while only Vasilis Barkas has been brought in so far.
Yesterday, we brought you news of our potential move for Roma’s Robin Olsen, with Celtic said to be keen on a loan move for the Swede.
Time will tell whether our move for the 30-year-old materialises – but the pressure is certainly off after bringing in Barkas to compliment Scott Bain.
In other news, Celtic will be in pot three for the Champions League group stage draw, should they make it through qualifying this summer.
