The Celtic supporters were quick to give the women’s team plenty of plaudits for their big win against Rangers at Murray Park yesterday.
A late Summer Green penalty bagged a superb 1-0 victory away from home for Fran Alonso’s side, who are really starting to motor in the SWPL.
The result moved Celtic up to second in the Women’s Premier League, only three points behind Glasgow City, who have won all four of their opening matches.
The win indeed allowed the Celtic Women to leapfrog ahead of Rangers in the table, although both sides are now tied together on nine points at this early stage of the campaign.
So far this season, Celtic Women have managed to overcome Hearts and Spartans respectively after an opening-day defeat to Glasgow City. Their win against Hearts was a particular standout with the Ghirls bagging a sensational 10 goals.
However, the win at Murray Park is yet another step forward for Alonso’s side. It was the new manager’s first-ever Glasgow derby, and one he evidently enjoyed as he took to social media to praise his team:
Of course, things don’t get much easier for Alonso’s side in the coming weeks. In just four days’ time, the Hoops will travel to Hibs and take on what is historically one of the best performing clubs in the women’s league.
After that, games against Forfar Farmington and Motherwell will round off their 2020 as they look to close the year out with a big run of form.
And it’s fair to say that the result against Rangers yesterday didn’t go unnoticed either by the support. The Hoops fans were quick to heap praise on the women for such a morale-boosting performance, whilst they also caught wind of a bit of trolling from the Celtic Twitter account.
