Today saw a Celtic XI vs Arbroath that included three trialists, and, unfortunately, a 1-0 defeat for the Hoops.
Arbroath’s official Twitter account seemed to be the only of the two clubs’ media sources reporting on the game. They confirmed the full-time score, which came courtesy of a Greig Spence winner.
Interestingly from an Arbroath perspective, Celtic are just the latest of several high-profile victims. Both Hibernian and Hearts have suffered defeats to the Red Lichties in pre-season. Dick Campbell’s Championship side look like they’re heading into the campaign in some fine form next month.
As for the Hoops, however, it was a poor loss for the makeshift side. Celtic didn’t feature a single first-team star in the contest. Instead, the most experienced player out of the lot for the Hoops was Calvin Miller. You can view the full team-line below:

Celtic XI vs Arbroath didn’t go to plan
So many of the players who played against Arbroath will be hopeful of some first-team action this season. The likes of Miller, Armstrong Oko-Flex, Karamoko Dembele, and Jack Aitchison will have been looking to catch the eye. Unfortunately, this isn’t a result that will impress anyone.
It also shows the difference in class that exists between senior and youth football. It perhaps proves why Celtic should try and get as many loan moves for their youngsters as possible this summer.
The game and teamsheet was also clouded in mystery as three trialists started the contest for Celtic. One of them you would expect would’ve been Liam Burt, who has been training at Lennoxtown over the last couple of weeks. That hasn’t been confirmed, however, and no confirmation of the trialists’ names have been reported either.
Extensive coverage of the match has yet to be reported. But it looks like it was a tough outing for our young Bhoys this afternoon.
Celtic’s first-team are currently preparing for their first Champions League qualifier against Bosnian champions Sarajevo. Dembele, Miller, and Aitchison were the only players in today’s squad that had first-team experience. That shows just how youthful a side Celtic had in Arbroath this afternoon.
It’s a tough lesson for the Bhoys, but no doubt they’ll take a lot from the match itself.
