Celtic youngster Liam Shaw is already earning excellent reviews at Motherwell, just days after joining the Steelmen on loan.

Keith Lasley, assistant manager and Fir Park favourite, has been impressed by the former Sheffield Wednesday man. It’s yet to be seen whether Shaw plays as a defender or a midfielder in his time away from Celtic. But he’s already being praised for his application and technical ability.

Shaw was brought in on a pre-contract deal by Celtic from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer. It was a controversial deal at the time, with Owls fans far from happy. Their chairman wasn’t best pleased either [SWFC].

The midfielder has only seen limited game-time since joining Celtic. He, like fellow Wednesday alumnus Osaze Urhoghide, impressed against Real Betis in the Europa League. However, his progression is surely best served away from Celtic for now.

Motherwell, then, is a good destination on paper. And the early signs are very promising.

Lasley said of the Celtic youngster [Daily Record]: “Liam’s in training with us and he has been for a few days now. He looks a good athlete and he looks technically good.

“You can see why he’s been highly thought of down at Sheffield Wednesday and you can see why Celtic have brought him up. Hopefully he makes an impact in the second half of the season. He looks a good player and I am looking forward to seeing him in action.”

Celtic youngster Liam Shaw making early impact at Motherwell

It’s great to hear Celtic youngster Liam Shaw is already impressing his coaches at Motherwell. It doesn’t appear that application or effort were ever an issue early on at Celtic. His style of play suggests he’s a grafter, someone will to do the hard yards to win the ball or do something with it.

Motherwell really is a great landing spot for him. Sure, there’s competition in the middle of that ‘Well midfield. But if Shaw can get at least 15 or so appearances between now and the end of the season, it could be so impactful.

Not just for him, but for the top 4 chasing Motherwell side.

The hope is, of course, that he’s another domestic loan success for Celtic. We’ve seen the likes of Kristoffer Ajer and Ryan Christie become first-teamers after impressive stints away. Kilmarnock and Aberdeen respectively were ideal proving grounds.

The move also means that Celtic supporters can easily see for themselves how youngster Shaw is getting on.

But if he’s already impressing Keith Lasley, an uncompromising figure in his playing days, then it’s a case of so far, so good.
