Stephen Welsh credits John Kennedy with playing a big role in his breakthrough at Celtic over the last 12 months.
Welsh produced a man of the match calibre performance against Motherwell on Saturday.
It was his second successive start for the Bhoys. His display bodes well for him getting more opportunities between now and the end of the season.
The young defender has had to remain patient for chances over the last year.
Neil Lennon has chosen to pursue other defensive options, including the struggling Shane Duffy, for longer than necessary.
Now though, there are hopes the young defender gets a sustained run in the team.
If he does, Welsh may have Kennedy to thank. The Celtic assistant manager has been a big influence on his career.
Welsh explained to The Herald: “I was a bit younger when Kendo was breaking through. But I have seen clips of him play. I think the big highlight was the game at the Camp Nou against Barcleona (in a UEFA Cup last 16 tie in 2004).
“He has been a really big part of my breaking into the reserves and first team. He has been a big help to me since I started training a few years ago. He went through a similar path to get into the first team and has helped me a lot.
“It doesn’t need to be big things because you have to go out on the park and play yourself. But if you are making mistakes here and there he gives you wee tips before and after games to make me better.”
A huge three months for Stephen Welsh
If Welsh gets regular football between now and May, it could be the making of his Celtic career. That’s truly what is at stake.
He is 21 now. Still young, of course, but at an age when potential turns into recognised ability, at least in perception, and careers start hitting crossroads.
Not to put too much pressure on the lad but it’s a huge few months for him.
This is what the rest of the season needs to be for Celtic. Giving people opportunities who could have a future at the club.
We know Shane Duffy doesn’t. Kristoffer Ajer could leave shortly. Nir Bitton… eh.
Most of our youngsters won’t make it as first-team regulars. Welsh may not either. But we need to find out. We might not have another period like this to blood in new talent for quite a while.
