Celtic youngster Lee O’Connor earns rave reviews for MOTM display in England

Celtic youngster Lee O’Connor earned rave reviews for his man of the match performance on loan at Tranmere Rovers this week.

The 20-year-old started his first match since January 10th in the EFL Trophy against Peterborough.

Although he primarily plays as a full-back, he was tasked with playing the 90 minutes as a defensive midfielder, adding another string to his already versatile bow.

The Republic of Ireland international helped his team to a 2-1 victory and Tranmere move on to the semi-finals of the competition. The chance to play at Wembley is now in sight.

O’Connor has not been involved in Keith Hill’s first-team of late, because of Covid-19 issues, but this performance against a League One side will surely lead to more opportunities over the coming weeks and months.

Rovers are currently sitting in fifth position in League Two and are pushing for an automatic promotion place. They are four points behind league leaders Cambridge United.

O’Connor arrived at Celtic from the Manchester United academy but was not given any chances in the senior side before gaining experience out on loan.

He is highly-rated in the Ireland set-up, winning caps at U17, U19 and U21 level. He’s even been handed his first senior cap, in a friendly against New Zealand back in 2019.

Hopes will be high of a Celtic impact when he returns to Lennoxtown this summer.
