Celtic youngster Luca Connell has a huge opportunity on loan

Any lingering questions Celtic fans had about Luca Connell this season have been answered.

The Irish youth international has joined Queens Park, in a surprise loan deal. Surprising not in its nature, but the club involved.

We mean no disrespect to our southernly neighbours at Hampden Park. However, we’d have thought Connell’s ability would’ve commanded more interest further up the Scottish pyramid.

No doubt, it’ll be fun for Connell. Queen’s Park have stormed to the top of the League 2 [SPFL]. A chance to get a historic club promoted is difficult to turn down. Furthermore, there’ll be more opportunities for Connell to show off his creative side; his first touch will set him apart in League 2, from what we’ve seen of him already.

Still, after 10 games for Bolton Wanderers in the English Championship [Transfermarkt], should we be worried? Is this loan move a reflection of Connell’s lack of development at Celtic? Or, more optimistically, is it a chance for a promising 19-year-old to add silverware and confidence to his locker?

Celtic supporters will be dearly hoping it’s the latter.

What can Celtic youngster Luca Connell bring to Queen’s Park?

Queen’s Park have got an excellent deal, here.

Again, with the utmost respect to the the SPFL, it’s not often a club like the Spiders can attract youth international quality. They’re obviously a club with a real emphasis on coaching youngsters, and we’ve seen recognised names come to the fore after spells at the club. Andy Robertson is an obvious example, and Luca Connell happens to come from Liverpool. It’s possible Connell recognised this.

The 19-year-old will bring pace, invention and trickery to the Spiders’ midfield. Comfortable playing as a deep-lying playmaker, or on the left-wing, his versatility will help in a demanding league.

If any Spiders fans are reading, then know that Celtic paid over the odds to secure the Irish youth international. Such was his talent and potential, the Bhoys sent Bolton more than they asked for [Daily Record]:

“To their credit, Celtic… have agreed to pay substantially more than the financial obligations in Luca’s contract.”

A big finish to the 20-21 campaign will give Celtic plenty to think about. There’s set to be major renovation in the summer, with the likes of Scott Brown, Tom Rogic and Olivier Ntcham somewhat likely to leave in the summer.

Liam Shaw’s arrival has added further competition for places, but Connell can give the next Celtic boss food for thought with a blockbuster loan spell.

The smart money says he’ll do just that.
