Celtic youngster Scott Robertson has confirmed that he’s now injury-free after the hamstring knock that set him back last month.
Robertson had made a fine start to life with Gillingham in England’s League One back in September. Working his way into the starting XI, it looked like he was on course to really kick on after four consecutive starts.
However, his hamstring injury kept him out of two matchday squads and since then he’s struggled to be selected regularly by Steve Evans in his starting line-up. Robertson hasn’t started any of the club’s last five matches, and that could lead to many thinking that his injury has returned.
But the Lennoxtown graduate has dismissed that notion as he insists he’s now injury-free after the initial knock.
Speaking in the Celtic View (18/11, page 33), Robertson said: “I started a few games in a row but I picked up a wee niggle with my hamstring again which kept me out for a couple of games.
“That was back in early October and since I got that cleared up I’ve had no problems and it’s been all good.
“We started off the season really well and were flying. We picked up 10 points from our first four or five games but we’ve gone through a wee blip in form recently. We turned that around with a win against Crewe so hopefully we can build on that and get as close as we can to the play-off spots.”
Plenty of time to win his place back
It does bode the question as to why Robertson missed the last few Gillingham games. However, it appears that this is simply a tactical decision by Evans as opposed to a selection one.
Staying injury-free this season is so crucial for the Celtic youngster in any case. This is his big chance to show Neil Lennon that he merits being in the conversation when he returns from Gillingham at the end of the season.
When players with the talent Robertson has go out on loan, it’s not something they plan to be doing for very long. He’ll have his eyes firmly set on being the next Callum McGregor and becoming a star of that Celtic midfield from the academy.

But we also can’t gloss over things either. Robertson needs to get himself back into Evans’ starting XI soon if he wants to keep the attention of the manager and the Celtic fans. One start in six games isn’t ideal (Transfermarkt).
Regardless, it’s great to see that it isn’t injury problems that are holding Robertson back at the moment. That’s not what he needs at only 19 years of age, and certainly not after being lauded by the likes of Scott Brown in the past (Celtic FC).
Time will tell whether this loan spell in Gillingham is a success or not. But Robertson needs to get back wowing fans down there as soon as possible.
