Celtic’s bid to bring foreign referees to Scottish Football has been shot down by the SFA.

The idea would have seen a complete makeover of Scotland’s referee and disciplinary system.

However, it appears that the status quo will remain after the SFA decided pursuing foreign refs was not an option.

The Daily Record reported on Celtic’s idea, which was put forward during a recent meeting between clubs and the SFA.

However Sky Sports reported that the SFA were not entertaining the idea at all.

Pressure has been mounting on the SFA Compliance officer after a high profile few weeks.

The Scottish Champions released a statement after John Beaton’s performance in the derby match in December.

Beaton’s refusal to send off Alfredo Morelos, coupled by no retrospective action being taken against the Colombian, had Celtic seething.

Brendan Rodgers advocated that all referees go full time, before saying the country could embrace foreign referees for big games.

The status quo

Despite the heated discussions, not a lot will be done regarding the recent controversy.

Not one club in the Premiership appears to be happy with the current situation.

However the SFA have refused to entertain the notion of foreign referees. This means we’re all stuck with the status quo for another while yet.
