A popular European football index account has assessed Celtic and every other competing club’s chances of making the UEFA Champions League knock-outs.

Brendan Rodgers‘ side got their 2023/24 campaign underway with a 2-0 defeat to Feyenoord on Tuesday night.

The other match in Group E between Lazio and Atletico Madrid finished 1-1, meaning that we are the only side yet to get off the mark.

We are undoubtedly in the toughest-looking position already, while our pot four status doesn’t add too much hope to proceedings.

Yet Euro Club Index — a popular Twitter account with 22,000 followers — has taken a look at the chances of each side making it through to the Champions League knockouts.

And we’re not quite as out of the picture as you may think. (@EuroClubIndex on Twitter)

While the likes of Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are all 95% or greater virtual certainties to qualify, we are down in 25th position with a 13% chance.

While that may not seem too high, that figure is for a top-two position. A later tweet from the same page gives us a 23% chance of finishing third and dropping into the Europa League.

Atletico Madrid are viewed as having the best chances in the section, with an 86% likelihood of making the Champions League knockouts. Feyenoord have a 57% chance and Lazio 45%.

Teams like Braga, Red Star Belgrade and Young Boys, who also lost their opener, have worse chances than us due to their hellish groups. Ours is much more open in contrast. If we can find a way to beat Lazio in less than a fortnight, it could really make things interesting.
