The Celtic supporters are looking forward to another home Champions League fixture tonight as Club Brugge come to Parkhead.

Brendan Rodgers knows that a win against the Belgian side will virtually guarantee a play-off place but also take Celtic one step closer to possible automatic qualification.

Celtic currently has seven points with Brugge on six and both teams will be hoping to bag all three points at Celtic Park.

After tonight’s game, there will be fixtures left for Celtic to negotiate a path out of the league and one of Rodgers’ future opponents to a Champions League battering last night.

Young Boys suffer huge Champions League defeat to Atalanta with Celtic Park visit still to come

After tonight’s fixture is over, Celtic will travel to Dinamo Zagreb on matchday six and then in January will face Young Boys in the penultimate fixture in UEFA’s flagship tournament.

The current Swiss champions are struggling amongst Europe’s elite and have scored just two goals and as yet, have picked up no points.

Last night Young Boys were hoping to change all that as Atalanta came visiting but found themselves on the end of a 6-1 hiding.

Mateo Retegui opened the scoring in the ninth minute for Atalanta but Young Boys hit back two minutes later through Silvère Ganvoula.

However, when Charles De Ketelaere put the Italians back in front in the 28th minute, Sead Kolašinac added another four minutes later before Retegui hit his second just before halftime to take a 4-1 lead in at the break.

De Ketelaere scored Atalanta’s fifth just before the hour mark and Lazar Samardžić scored the Serie A side’s sixth to complete the rout.

Where Celtic’s Champions League opponents Club Brugge, Aston Villa and Young Boys sit in the table

Young Boys are rooted to the bottom of the Champions League table with no points out of 15 and with just two goals scored. The Swiss side’s European adventure is all but over.

Brugge, with six points, still has a great chance to get out of the league phase in 23rd place with two wins and two defeats from their first four fixtures.

Aston Villa have nine points in 12th place after three wins from four but did lose to Brugge in their last Champions League outing.

Celtic, of course, also have their own chance of progression with seven points in 18th place after the Bhoys’ impressive wins over Slovan Bratislava, the Celtic Park hammering of RB Leipzig and a draw against Atalanta.

A win tonight would take Brendan Rodgers’ side up to ten points and possibly into the automatic qualification places depending on how other results go tonight.
