Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis showed his personality 4 weeks ago after his first Parkhead hat-trick against Dundee.

In what was a major breakthrough performance from the Greek striker, he followed it up with some hugely bold post-match remarks. He stated that Celtic were better than Rangers in every department and that Celtic had shown they were the better team [Daily Record].

In addition to that, the former VVV-Venlo star came out and said that he believes Celtic would win the championship because of the above. It was bold, hard-hitting, and so refreshing to hear.

Granted, it’s not the kind of talk that’s for everyone. There was certainly a mixed reaction to it from the Celtic supporters. Many believed it was brilliant to see this level of confidence in the team. Others felt it was something that could easily come back to haunt us.

All eyes were on his immediate reaction to the comments too. Would he back them up with some top performances? Or would he be made to eat his words?

So far, Giakoumakis’ response to the comments has been absolutely emphatic. Indeed, the Greek striker has netted 5 goals in his last 2 games against Dundee United and Ross County respectively. Not to mention he put in an impressive cameo in the 3-1 win ove Livingston a couple of weeks back.

Giorgos Giakoumakis showing no signs of crumbling under Celtic title pressure – acid test lies in wait

This says plenty about the character of Giakoumakis. The fact he’s able to make such controversial remarks in a hotbed such as Scottish football and then continue to take the headlines? There’s nothing more satisfying than a footballer who can back up his boasts. Especially when he’s playing for your team.

The comments clearly had no real affect on Giakoumakis, certainly not in a negative manner. He doesn’t look like a player carrying any extra pressure on his shoulders. He doesn’t look like someone who’s suffering under the pressure of delivering as our top striker.

Granted, the trip to Ibrox will be his acid test. Celtic will be looking to go 6 points clear and effectively kill off the title race. In other words, Giakoumakis will be tasked with firing the Hoops more or less to the title in Govan.

How glorious it would be if the Greek striker was to be the hero. There would be nothing more hilarious than having one of our players flat out state that we’re better than Rangers before going out and proving it on their own patch. All the while ensuring their title hopes are dashed because of it.

Giakoumakis was superb in the 3-0 win over Rangers back in February. Since then, his confidence has only shot up, especially after back-to-back hat-tricks at Celtic Park. He goes into this one more confident than any other player on the pitch.

And nothing would vindicate his comments more if he stepped things up further and landed a KO on Rangers.
